Summary

A woman posing as a medium who can channel the spirit world comes face to face with the truth in this short historical fantasy by Hugo Award–winning author Nghi Vo。

The Fogg River Seminary, a girls’ school in a small Illinois town, is supposed to be just another stop on Maryse and Vasyl’s endless travels。 They’ve made lucrative use of Maryse’s “foreign” looks in their melodramatic séance act—and an act is all it is。 Then, during their performance, a blizzard sweeps in and cuts them off from town completely。 In the freezing halls, there’s a voice speaking the secrets of the dead, and Maryse has no choice but to listen…because this time, the voice is real。

Made me want more3。5 ⭐️ if that were possible here。 I wish this one had been longer but I did like it。 If I didn’t have to read it twice to fully absorb it, I’d rate it higher。

At the end of the day a very standard ghost story that offers few surprises, but Nghi Vo's subtle and moving style really elevates it。 At the end of the day a very standard ghost story that offers few surprises, but Nghi Vo's subtle and moving style really elevates it。 。。。more

Interesting story over all but parts of it felt rushed and not fully thought out。

A superb ghost storyWhat a pleasure it is to discover a new author whose writing thrills and enthralls! This a vivid piece of fiction with unique characters and setting。 Now I will go look for Ms Vo’s other books。

Short, beautiful, unsettling storyIn the late 1800s, two people arrive in a small town to give a performance, one a medium and the other her ‘handler’。 The medium is Vietnamese, but pretends she is from some exotic country and doesn’t speak English。 They both know that their show is a fraud and the medium has never spoken with the dead。 But that is about to change in this small town。

This was delicious and I will read absolutely anything Nghi Vo writes, end of story。

This was good, but I'm not sure this author is for me。 This had a tone that kind of turned me off。 I also am really uninterested in that Gatsby retelling one。 Maybe I'll try those novellas she published, the ones with the animals on them。 We'll see。 This was good, but I'm not sure this author is for me。 This had a tone that kind of turned me off。 I also am really uninterested in that Gatsby retelling one。 Maybe I'll try those novellas she published, the ones with the animals on them。 We'll see。 。。。more

Of the three stories I've read from "Into Shadow" series, this one gave me the least satisfaction。 I think it was a bit rushed (some of the vocabulary seemed anachronistic to me), and definitely felt like a part of a greater, obscured whole。 I would say, though, that a longer story, even a novel, in that setting would appeal。 Of the three stories I've read from "Into Shadow" series, this one gave me the least satisfaction。 I think it was a bit rushed (some of the vocabulary seemed anachronistic to me), and definitely felt like a part of a greater, obscured whole。 I would say, though, that a longer story, even a novel, in that setting would appeal。 。。。more

Short story I listened to on audio, and like all of Nghi Vo's work, I thought it was delightful。 Spooky and horror-esque without freaking me out too much (I'm a baby), atmospheric, and with some cool supernatural world-building efforts in this historical time-period that added some nice flavor。 Plus, POC rep is always great。 It's a short story, and while I'd say it was satisfying overall, it did feel a little shorter than totally ideal, but that's my only real issue。 Honestly, I'll pretty much r Short story I listened to on audio, and like all of Nghi Vo's work, I thought it was delightful。 Spooky and horror-esque without freaking me out too much (I'm a baby), atmospheric, and with some cool supernatural world-building efforts in this historical time-period that added some nice flavor。 Plus, POC rep is always great。 It's a short story, and while I'd say it was satisfying overall, it did feel a little shorter than totally ideal, but that's my only real issue。 Honestly, I'll pretty much read anything by this author。。。 。。。more

Liked the writing, liked the characters and setting, found the plot overly elaborate for a short story。

So good I wish it was longer。I want to know more about Maryse and Vasyl and their whole scam。 Normally when I read about people who take advantage of grief-stricken families, I get angry。 Since we start out from their perspective and they are going to an event, not a family home type scene, I wanted to find out more; does Maryse have some type of psychic powers or is it all fake? What is her relationship with Vasyl? The mystery happened quickly and kinda came out of nowhere。 The resolution was j So good I wish it was longer。I want to know more about Maryse and Vasyl and their whole scam。 Normally when I read about people who take advantage of grief-stricken families, I get angry。 Since we start out from their perspective and they are going to an event, not a family home type scene, I wanted to find out more; does Maryse have some type of psychic powers or is it all fake? I never really know what to say about short stories。 I really enjoyed this one。

A delightfully creepy short story about scammers getting caught up in their own ghost story。 I felt like this one would've been a great novella-length story because there was so much potential with the ghosts。 But that being said I thought it told the story really well and still managed to scared me even though it was so fast paced。 A delightfully creepy short story about scammers getting caught up in their own ghost story。 I felt like this one would've been a great novella-length story because there was so much potential with the ghosts。 But that being said I thought it told the story really well and still managed to scared me even though it was so fast paced。 。。。more
